EAST ASIA — Super Typhoon Dolphin, one of the most intense tropical cyclones of the Pacific typhoon season, is barreling west-northwest across the northwestern Pacific Ocean, placing weather agencies and coastal regions across East Asia on high alert. The storm experienced explosive intensification, reaching Category 5-equivalent strength on the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center scale and maintaining sustained wind speeds exceeding 200 kilometers per hour with even stronger gusts.
Fueled by exceptionally warm sea surface temperatures, high atmospheric moisture, and low vertical wind shear, Dolphin underwent rapid intensification as its sustained winds surged dramatically within a single 24-hour window. High-resolution satellite imagery captured a sharply defined eye structure, a signature mark of a fully matured super typhoon. Meteorological tracking centers noted that Dolphin’s central pressure plummeted to near 910 hectopascals, establishing it as one of the most powerful July storms recorded in the region in recent years.
Currently steering along the southern periphery of a dominant subtropical high-pressure system, the typhoon is moving west-northwest at approximately 20 to 25 kilometers per hour. Global forecasting models present divergent paths beyond the multi-day horizon: one trajectory indicates a track toward the Ryukyu Islands of Japan and the coastal provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian in eastern China, while AI-assisted and ensemble models suggest a potential northward recurve toward mainland Japan or the Korean Peninsula.
Even prior to making potential landfall, Dolphin’s massive atmospheric footprint is already affecting weather patterns across the western Pacific. Meteorologists warn that the typhoon’s extensive circulation will strengthen southwest monsoon flow, generating hazardous sea conditions with wave heights between 2 and 4 meters across vital shipping lanes. Coastal defense agencies and residents across eastern China, Taiwan, and Japan are advised to monitor official weather advisories continuously as the storm approaches.
