The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to hold a public demonstration on August 12 to protest against the growing economic difficulties facing the country. The decision was spearheaded by party Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed during the 36th meeting of the MDP’s 4th National Council session.
Addressing the council, Nasheed highlighted the severe challenges currently burdening citizens and emphasized the urgent need to speak out against them. He pointed to the rising cost of living and inflation as major drivers of public concern. Furthermore, Nasheed cited the emergence of a thriving black market for US dollars and the overall state of the Maldivian economy as critical issues that require citizens to take to the streets and demand action.
August 12 holds deep significance in Maldivian political history. The date is tied to a pivotal prison shooting incident during former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration that led to the death of a young inmate, Evan Naseem—an event that subsequently catalyzed the nation’s pro-democracy movement.
