Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that preparations are underway to take to the streets to put the government back on track.
Speaking at a gathering held Wednesday night at the Dandikoshi Haruge on Chandhanee Magu, Nasheed expressed his readiness to head out onto the streets, adding that he is fully confident the public will join the effort.
“Many people ask about taking to the streets to keep this government accountable—I am very ready. We are currently planning for this work,” Nasheed said.
Nasheed stated that he is confident that, once the situation reaches a point where the Maldivian people can no longer tolerate it, they will rise up against the government.
“We will always come out alongside those citizens, and God willing, we will always stand with them,” Nasheed said.
The Parliament’s 241 Committee recently decided that if a former President participates in a protest, their security detail will be temporarily suspended for the duration of the protest. However, Nasheed assured that he would still join the protests even if his security is withdrawn.
