Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has gone over a month without holding a press conference, failing to fulfill his pledge to conduct regular weekly media interactions every Monday morning. 

The President last met with local journalists on June 29. Five weeks have passed since that briefing, with four of those weeks having Mondays that were regular working days rather than public holidays.

Addressing the gap in media briefings, President’s Office Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef stated that President Muizzu was unable to meet with reporters due to a demanding meeting schedule. Shareef added that the President intends to host press conferences whenever time permits in his schedule.

​During his Presidential Address on February 5, President Muizzu had explicitly assured the media that he would personally hold routine one-hour press briefings every Monday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, beginning in March. He clarified at the time that these meetings would take place regularly unless he was away on an official trip abroad or if the day coincided with a public holiday.

​Despite this commitment, President Muizzu has repeatedly missed scheduled briefings even while present in the capital city, Malé. Out of the 24 weeks that have passed since the weekly press sessions were introduced on March 2, the President has met with journalists in only eight of those weeks. Prior to launching the regular weekly format in March, President Muizzu had hosted only two press conferences since taking office—the first on December 5, 2023, and the second on May 3, 2025.
