The trade agreement between the governments of the Republic of Maldives and the Republic of Türkiye has officially entered into force as of August 1, 2026. The landmark agreement is designed to substantially ease cross-border commercial transactions and streamline trade between the two partner nations.
Originally signed on November 4, 2024, by Maldivian Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed and Turkish Minister of Trade Prof. Dr. Ömer Bolat, the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) aims to bolster bilateral economic cooperation and establish a more conducive environment for businesses and investors.
Both nations have now fulfilled all requisite legal and regulatory procedures, including formal ratification and administrative clearances. Following the recent exchange of final written diplomatic notifications, key provisions of the framework—including tariff reductions and trade facilitation measures—have officially taken effect.
The implementation of the agreement is expected to lower import costs for Turkish goods entering the Maldivian market while opening new avenues for Maldivian products to be exported to Türkiye. Government authorities regard the pact as a significant milestone in ongoing efforts to diversify the Maldivian economy and expand international trade partnerships.
